As part of the Pacific Seas Aquarium Community Celebration, every Tuesday evening this April we’re gathering the best local scientists and ocean folks we can find for a dynamic speaker series at venues around Tacoma. Come listen, learn and be inspired to protect our ocean. All events are free.

 

April 2: Lightning Talks

April 9: Our Ocean and You
Annie Crawley and whale

Join underwater filmmaker, photographer and explorer Annie Crawley, plus Tacoma and the Sea’s Dean Burke, for an evening of breathtaking ocean imagery. Find out what you can do to protect the ocean.

April 16: Sharkwater Extinction
Scalloped Hammerhead Shark

Watch filmmaker Rob Stewart as he exposes the illegal shark finning industry in the film “Sharkwater Extinction,” then join in a Q&A session with Zoo aquarist Gavin Wuttken, a passionate diver and shark spokesman about what we can all do to save sharks.

April 23: Uncovering Ocean Mysteries
Green sea turtle in Baja Bay Pacific Seas Aquarium

Meet the scientists and Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium staff who study hammerhead sharks, save endangered sea turtles, and explore new ways to uncover the lives of ocean creatures. Includes Alejandra Sandoval on researching tagging and tracking nesting green sea turtles in Mexico, Dr. James Anderson from the California State University Long Beach Shark Lab and Brad Nahill, director and co-founder of conservation non-profit SEE Turtles.

April 30: Ocean Heroes

From the tropical seas of Belize to shores of Commencement Bay, hear and meet some of the people who are fighting to protect our ocean: Dr. Rachel Graham from MarAlliance, kayaker and Ikkatsu Project founder Ken Campbell, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife detective Lauren Wendt with K9 Benny, who will demonstrate how they detect illegal shark products.
