Ocean Voices Speaker Series

As part of the Pacific Seas Aquarium Community Celebration, every Tuesday evening this April we’re gathering the best local scientists and ocean activists we can find for a dynamic speaker series at venues around Tacoma. Come listen, learn and be inspired to protect our ocean. All events are free.

 

April 2: Lightning Talks

Ages: 21+

Over a dozen local individuals or groups will give lightning-fast talks: just five minutes each! See incredible ocean imagery and hear what they do. Includes paddleboarder and sports/tourism CEO Dean Burke on social change, Bethany Llewellyn from the University of Puget Sound’s Oikonos Lab on seabirds and plastic, Surfrider Foundation on community action, Bonnie Becker from the University of Washington, Tacoma’s Becker Lab on microplastics in water, Rachel Easton from Harbor Wild Watch on marine life, Ryan Spence from the Foss Waterway Seaport on chasing Cousteau, and our own aquarist Marc Duncan on why we built an aquarium.

 

April 9: Our Ocean and You

Join underwater filmmaker, photographer and activist Annie Crawley, plus Tacoma and the Sea’s Dean Burke, for an evening of breathtaking ocean imagery. Find out what you can do to protect the ocean.

 

 

April 16: Shark Crisis
Scalloped Hammerhead Shark

The Grand Cinema, 606 S. Fawcett Ave., Tacoma, WA 98402

Watch filmmaker Rob Stewart as he exposes the illegal shark finning industry in the film “Sharkwater Extinction,” then join in a Q&A session with Zoo aquarist Gavin Wuttken, a passionate diver and shark spokesman about what we can all do to save sharks.

 

 

 

April 23: Uncovering Ocean Mysteries

Meet the scientists and Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium staff who study hammerhead sharks, save endangered sea turtles, and explore new ways to uncover the lives of ocean creatures.

 

 

 

April 30: Ocean Heroes

From the tropical seas of Belize to shores of Commencement Bay, hear and meet some of the people who are fighting to protect our ocean: diver and YouTube sensation Laura James, Rachel Graham from MarAlliance, kayaker and Ikkatsu founder Ken Campbell, Zoo youth volunteers and more.
