Volunteer Spotlight: Alfredo Miranda

At Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, our volunteers are the heart of our mission to connect people to wildlife and inspire conservation action. One of the shining stars of our volunteer team is Alfredo Miranda, whose energy, curiosity, and commitment make him an incredible interpreter and a true ambassador for our zoo.

Volunteer Alfredo

Alfredo joined the zoo as a volunteer in September 2022, and in just three years, he’s made an incredible impact: over 575 lifetime hours, including 100+ hours in 2025 alone. In 2023, his passion and dedication earned him recognition as Co-Rookie of the Year, and he continues to mentor new interpretive volunteers.

“I was looking for a way to serve the community and grow personally,” Alfredo says. “The staff and volunteers here are amazing people, and the training gave me a strong foundation. The more I’ve learned about animals, the more I enjoy sharing that with guests.”

As a Guest Experience Interpreter, Alfredo rotates through all areas of the zoo and aquariums, engaging with guests of all ages. Whether talking about the marine animals or discussing the conservation of Red Wolves, Alfredo’s enthusiasm is infectious.

“It’s a constant learning experience,” he said. “Each animal has its own story, and I love observing their behaviors and seasonal changes. The zoo grounds are beautiful all year, and it’s a privilege to be part of a place that cares so deeply for animals and conservation.”

Alfredo’s journey perfectly exemplifies what Point Defiance Zoo volunteers gain: new knowledge, friendships, fulfillment, and a deeper connection to wildlife and nature.
