A baby spectacled owl, hatched on April 1, is growing steadily behind the scenes at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

Because the owlet is still so young, the zoo’s veterinary staff is keeping a close eye on its development. The team checks in frequently to ensure everything is progressing well, and so far, all signs are positive.

Right now, the owlet is being fed three times a day to support its rapid growth. The owl’s sex is still unknown; the veterinary team plans to perform a simple blood test in a few weeks, once the chick is a bit older.

Zoo guests may have the chance to see the owlet later this summer at the Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater.

Spectacled owls start their lives covered in soft white down. As they grow, they develop their darker feathers and signature “spectacles.” They are named for the distinctive white markings around their eyes that look just like a pair of glasses. Native to Central and South America, they thrive in tropical forests and are mostly active at night. These owls are also known for their deep, booming calls, which can carry long distances through the forest. Even though they may look calm and gentle, spectacled owls are powerful predators, feeding on small mammals, birds, and insects.
