Citizen Science

Get Do you like to explore the natural world? Do you want to contribute to real science research while having fun outdoors? 

Then you'll want to Explore the Shore, Spot the Swallows, or Peak for Pikas with Point Defiance Zoo naturalists in our citizen science projects!

Citizen Science opportunities are great for families. Children (under age 18) must be accompanied by an adult.

BioBlitzes are targeted biological surveys - a 24-hour "blitz" in which all living things are counted - birds, mammals, fish, plants and insects to name a few.

We did it! Over 24 hours our staff and 327 participants counted 462 unique species in 2,013 observations.

Spot the Swallows


Help monitor local nest box sites for purple martins. Join us for a fun and informative workshop and learn how to become a Citizen Scientist!

Commitment:  Attend the training workshop then complete one survey per month from April to August.

Peaking for Pikas

If you're a hiker or nature lover, you can participate in wildlife research to help the American pika. Hike to help wildlife as you become a pika conservationist!

Explore the Shore

Join us for low tide beach walks at Owen Beach, where we identify tide pool animals and record their presence and location to create a baseline of what is found at Owen Beach.
