Join us on Friday October 1st, 2010 as we host the Storming the Sound conference for environmental and sustainability educators in the South Puget Sound region. Cool School Challenge
You are invited to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, on Saturday December 4, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for a FREE professional development workshop to learn about the Cool School Challenge" an exciting program that will help teachers and students implement climate change solutions at your school. Washington State Clock Hours will be available.
The Cool School Challenge engages students, teachers and school districts in a school-wide initiative to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2,000 pounds or more per classroom, per school year. The program can be administered by any person interested in becoming a "Challenge Coach," and is especially suited for science and math teachers.The workshop includes a special presentation by Point Defiance education specialists about polar bears and climate change. Participants will also visit the Zoo's polar bears, and meet one of their zookeepers.
This workshop is sponsored by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and Puget Sound Energy and will be conducted by the Cool School Challenge Team. Facing the Future's climate change curriculum will also be explored.

Join the Zoo and Facing the Future (www.facingthefuture.org) on Wednesday July 20, 2011 for this Climate Change workshop for 6th-12th grade teachers. (5th grade teachers may also apply).

Participate in hands-on activities from Climate Change: Connection and Solutions, an interdisciplinary, self-contained two-week unit aligned with national education standards that lays the foundation for understanding some of the forces behind climate change and its connections to numerous social, economic, and environmental factors.
This workshop will also include presentations from Zoo staff about polar bears, how climate change is affecting their survival, what the Zoo is doing to support polar bears and how you can help them too!
This workshop is offered free of charge to teachers, thanks to the support of The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Committee. Clock hours are included.
