Citizen Science

Do you like to explore the natural world? Do you want to contribute to real science research in a fun outdoor project? Maybe you want to Explore the Shore, Spot the Swallows, or Monitor the Marsh with Point Defiance Zoo naturalists as part of ongoing citizen science projects!

Citizen Science opportunities are great for families. Children (under age 18) must be accompanied by an adult.


Spot the Swallows

Help monitor local nest box sites for purple martins. Join us for a fun and informative workshop and learn how to become a Citizen Scientist!

Training Workshop Date:
Sunday, April 3, 2016 2-4 pm

Workshop pre-registration and attendance is required to participate in the program.
Commitment:  Attend the training workshop then complete one survey per month from April to August.

Monitor the Marsh

Help monitor local wetlands for amphibian egg masses during special weekend events. We provide the gear - all you need do is show up and have fun.


Join us for one or more of these Citizen Science Saturdays:

February 20, 1-3 pm  FULL
March 19, 1-3 pm  FULL
April 16, 1-3 pm  FULL

Pre-registration is required. Families are welcome, children must be 8 or older to participate, and must be accompanied by an adult.

Peaking for Pikas

If you're a hiker or nature lover, you can participate in wildlife research to help the American pika. Volunteer and hike to help wildlife as you become a pika conservationist!

Training Workshop Date: Saturday, April 30, 2016, 2-4 pm

Workshop pre-registration and attendance is required to participate in the program.
Commitment:  Attend the training then complete at least one survey in the Cascades.

Explore the Shore

Join us for low tide beach walks at Owen Beach, where we identify tide pool animals and record their presence and location to create a baseline of what is found at Owen Beach.
