Ocean Commotion

February 15 - February 17

Join us for an adventure through the ocean! Touch a stingray, build a reef, act like a sea star, and more. Dive deep into educational activities and "sea" what's so amazing about ocean life!

This year at Ocean Commotion, discover amazing ocean creatures and their habitats through interactive games like All About Sharks and Camouflage Corner. Find out why red fish look black underwater. Connect with our animals and watch them receive special treats and enrichments, learn how to benefit the oceans with your everyday behavior, and help us care for ocean creatures with special service projects.


Activity schedule

  • Oceans of Fun (10:00 - 3:00) Discover ocean creatures and their habitats through interactive games like Camouflage Corner, All About Sharks, Critter Sort, and Underwater Color.
  • Watershed Wonders (10:30 & 1:30) Join in this experiment to see what happens to Puget Sound waters when it rains. (North Pacific Aquarium)             
  • Marine Mammal Food Prep (11:30-2:30) Peek behind the scenes to see where food is prepared for the marine mammals of Rocky Shores.
  • Ocean Chemistry (12:30 & 2:30) Find out how carbon dioxide can be a clam's kryptonite. (North Pacific Aquarium)
  • Marine Mammal Keeper Talk (3:00) Watch keepers present afternoon treats & enrichments to harbor seals and walruses!

Service Projects for Conservation

Join PDZA for a morning of improving trails and landscape beds and apply the same methods to your own yard or neighborhood. Projects run from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and are limited to 25 participants. Reservations are required (see below). Meet staff at the Zoo's main entrance and wear work gloves and weather-appropriate clothing.

  • Saturday: Learn how to divert runoff water into soils instead of letting it wash away trails and pathways.
  • Sunday: Practice laying mulch in plant beds to create healthy soils and eliminate soil erosion.
